Sofia, generally Istanbul is safe for tourists, if you keep a low profile and stick to the main tourist routes. It can get a bit sketchy away from those areas, but that's also true of London, Paris, Sydney, and Washington!

It's always best to get some local knowledge, so before heading out check with your hotel staff about the safe and not-so-safe areas.

It is definitely safe to walk in Taksim are on famous Istiklal street. as these are have thousands of people walk side by side from 08:00 in the morning until 04:00 in the morning.
So when you are in that crowd you need to keep your bags zip off in case of not having someone hands in your bags or your pocket to take the cash away from you.

Im a tourist guide and I have also heard some story from some of my guest that they met some one on the street and that guy told them he knows good bar which has a bally dance show. They had followed him and found their selves in a empty bar and they forced to leave all cash they have with them.

So no meter where you are don't trust some one who you met on the street.
