Going to Turkey for 4-5 days in mid-April. I have been to Istanbul before and am hoping to spend a few days there but also see some other parts of the country. Is it possible to make it to, say, Ephesus and/or Izmir in such a short time? If so, any transport suggestions? Or any other suggestions of places to see within a reasonable distance from Istanbul?

You could catch the bus which goes to all parts of Turkey - I used to do them overnight to save on accommodation costs. You could also fly internally.

From Ist to Ephesus its about 5 hours on the bus, or to Kas it is around 12 hours. You can definitely get around a long way if you mix bus and planes.

I would stick to the sites and activities that are generally on the Western part of Turkey. On the bus, it can take up to a whole day to get to some places because of the mountainous terrain. For example, it's an all day bus ride from Istanbul to Pammukale (which is totally worth visiting). Visiting Ephesus or other towns in that general area is probably recommended, and you might also want to visit some places on the coast of the Black Sea. Otherwise you should fly to anything farther away, such as Cappadocia or the southern coast. over 8 years ago

─░zmir is about 8 hours by bus but it is fun beacuse the bus takes a ferry for two hours so you can enjoy a free ferry ride included! over 8 years ago
