I'm travelling with my husband for one weeks holiday and want to know how safe it will be.
I am in Zarzis now and it will be fine almost 8 years agoAnswered by JB via WorldNomads.com
Bridgete, there's a general election coming up ( a novelty for Tunisians) but it's not until October, so you'll have been and gone.
Just 3 days ago the Tunisian government dismissed as rumours the threats by Islamic extremists to target tourist locations this summer, but said they'd be putting them under high surveillance anyway to allay the fears of visitors.
So it seems like you might see lots of security around the resorts. Hopefully that makes you fel safer and not more nervous.
Zarzis is a well developed tourist destination, the Tunisian government knows foreign currency (from tourists) is vital to their economy, and it seems like they're doing all in their power to protect that income.
If I were you I'd stick close to the town and not go any closer to the Libyan border - apparently it's a bit touchy there with the thousands of people trying to get out of Libya.
To be on the safe side, register your travel with your embassy, so they know where you are and when just in case it does go pear-shaped.
