There is a high level of violent crime, and tourists are often the target. Muggings and armed robbery are common day and night (obviously after dark falls is worse).
The US government has a crime and risk rating system for it's diplomatic staff and puts the capital Lome in the "critical" basket.
Robbery on the beaches - even during daylight hours - is common.
The political situation is unstable and there were violent demonstrations in 2012 and 2013, with the prospect of more.
Despite all this it's not the worst place on earth - you're going to have to be very cautious and exercise a high level of personal security.
