Hi Nelson, yes it can be challenging with accomodation in the districts (outside of Dili). Most of the accomodation is guest house style. There are hotels in Com and Baucau. Take a look at PDT runs a great site with business listings, including accomodation - http://timor.buildingmarkets.org/
Where are you looking at going? Also you should know what even if you book, it seems that it is very much first come first served!

There are many places to stay - they just take abit of searching for and most are quite simple. Where are you thinking of going and how long are you here for?
If you go East-there's Baucau as Jason mentioned-loads of accom options - up into the hills south of there is a cool place called Loi Hunu-in Ossu-where you can go trekking-check out caves and trad. cooking classes etc. and further on Jaco Island is always a favourite with a simple community based ecolodge and lots of beautiful snorkelling and amazing fish.
Or come to Atauro island-where I live and work, loads to do here and its only a boat trip from Dili-ecolodges, trekking, snorkelling and more.
Enjoy, its a great country.

As a developing country it can be hard booking accommodation on any larger hotel booking engine, but you can try the locally owned website - http://www.timorleste-hotels.com/ - it has been setup with the support of whl.travel and the local government to facilitate online tourism. almost 8 years ago
