I have used it and have no problem... Though when I came back from Thailand I got a call to confirm if I had used the card there from my company as there have been cases of misuse... I guess it's safer to use travellers checks or specific travel currency cards if available in your country... I would not use debit cards directly linked to my bank account... about 9 years ago

A general advice would be to have couple of cards (or more) when traveling in these areas. Master, Visa etc. Then you are covered in different situations. I have experienced to come to a country where there in fact was only one ATM in the whole country that accepted master card (at the airport inside the departure...!!) , whilst Visa was accepted all over the country..... Also based on security is it smart to have more than one credit card with you while exploring new countries ;-)
