Phuket is fine, but very touristy and extremelly expensive. I would take the ferry from phuket to Koh Phi Phi (pay no more than 250 Baht), and enjoy your time on that island. Phi Phi is a short 3ish hour ride, which is stunning by the way, and the island has far better beaches and night life than Phuket. In Phuket you get all the Euro tourists who come for one week and don't mind spending 50 Euro a night for a bungalow. On Phi Phi, it caters for more to the backpacker and you can find cheap accommodation on the water, as well. Plus, the dancing and fire shows on the beach every night are not to be topped (except for the full moon party on Koh Phangan of course). Enjoy Southern Thailand! over 6 years ago

Rawai is much less touristy that Patong, you can take cheap meals along the beachfront, enjoy a day on Nai Harn or Ya Nui Beach as Rawai is not good for swimming. Patong is full of life at night time but it is tourist land whereas Rawai has bars and restaurants that are low key in comparison. From Rawai you can take a longtail boat to the many offshore islands ( Bon, Coral, Lone, Racha) but to get to Phi Phi you will need to go from Phuket town and stay overnight there to make the journey worth spending. If you like temples there is a temple in Rawai, one on Buddha island or 'Koh Kaew" in Thai but the most well known is Chalong Temple. You can rent a bike/car to get around or take a taxi from Rawai Beach. If you want to see a little bit about Rawai have a look at www.rawaiphuket.blogspot.com and also www.bonislandphuket.wordpress.com or visit the facebook page for Rawai, Phuket and Bon Island.
Hope this is of some help, I have lived/worked in Rawai for 23 years so if you have a question email me at dawnlisafarrell@hotmail.com over 6 years ago

I am staying at the Rawai Beach Resort as I wrote this, with my family. Rawai beach is the best place in Phuket close to everything. 5 minutes from Nai Harn Beach, the nicest beach on the island. Go to the Big Buddah, weekend market, Phuket Zoo, Supercheap, Cape Prom Thep. Take a boat to Racha Yai for snorkeling. There are a million things to do and most are very cheap. Great location for a family. over 6 years ago

Cheap? I dont think so. The prices for anything you do doubles those from other less known/visited islands from thailand such as koh phayam for example. about 1 year ago
