The best way is surely to rent a car; it's not to expensive, the gasoline is cheap and the roads are mostly good.

Thailand is a beautiful country. Besides the low cost airlines - it would be nice to travel by buses or trains. Also hiring a car is a great way to travel. If not a cab is a bit costly but a good driver can be an asset. Or a travel friend and partner can do good wonders.

Sorry and I know all travel experiences are different, but to travel a place such as Thailand by car is silly. Get amongst it with the locals, Island hoping in the long boats and travelling via there buses/tuk tuks and scooters. Travelling through Thailand for me was great, and I never went near a car. Also the same for Vietnam and Cambodia. over 9 years ago
I am Thai so i say the following on the discussion
Air travel - best price and reliable is Air Asia.
Trains quite good, safe and cheap - pay the little extra for first or second class cabin. (take your own food onboard)
Bus travel, for me never. I drive the highways often and the most amount of accidents involve these highway bus trips esp. at night. Drivers fall asleep as they are over worked by the company & bus poorly maintained. If you want to bus travel north from Bangkok the only bus company that is safe is called NCA bus, very safe and well run company unlike all others!
Rent a car, ok yes if you are experienced driver and can adapt to the style of driving quickly. Thais are not great drivers if you seen the driver license test you would understand how easy it is to get a license to drive fast.

Yer bus travel at night for the brave only, many accidents on the highways at night and they are always breaking down when not crashing! The highway conditions in some places are very dangerous and difficult for the drivers, throw in some heavy rain and guess what happens next. The bus companys do not have the high customer #s these days thanks to the low cost flights now, so the maintenance budget is low on stuff like brakes, tyres etc....... over 9 years agoAnswered by Troy Negus via WorldNomads.com
Sounds like i will not be getting on a bus at night! thanks for the advice guys... over 9 years agoAnswered by Tod Braun via WorldNomads.com
You can rent a car but the driving here is crazy. Rules of the road you learned may not apply here. Buses are cheap but I think not too fun. A great way to get around Thailand is by train. They are slow and often late so if you in a hurry you will be unhappy. For me, I like to go to the dining car, drink a beer, look out the window at the passing views and chat with locals or x-pats. over 9 years ago
