My friend and I want vacation as far away as possible from tourists. We want to meet locals, and discover beautiful landscapes (mountains or sea, whatever) ! Thanks for helping :)
For a truly non tourist experience go to any small town and stay in a hotel that local (or Thai tourists) use and walk around, go to the markets, find restaurants full of locals.
If you travel to areas with beautiful landscapes there will be other tourists there, farang and Thai but even there it is easy to get a sense of the culture of the area by going for a walk AWAY from the beach, temple, old town or whatever attraction is drawing the tourists. Remember that Thais are generally shy and overly friendly locals may have an ulterior motive. over 3 years agoAnswered by Callan via WorldNomads.com
Here are a few in various corners of the country:
- try the Khymer temples of Champasak in the Far East
- never mind Hua Hin south of Bangkok, hire a car and drive 90 minutes south to Prachuap Khiri khan. Delightful.
- in the far north east, head up to Nong Khai and follow the Mekong west around to Loei, or turn east and find the temples of Bung Khan.
All definitely off the beaten track.
Oh, and as the other answer suggested: find a local market town and head to the night market to eat. Awesome. over 3 years ago
