What are the best islands to see in Southern Thailand during the rainy season and on a backpackers budget?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated! :)

Koh Samet is widely known to be the driest place in Thailand... In the middle of the rainy season, if you are going to see any sun at all it's going to be here!
It's the closest island to Bangkok... just a 2.5 hour drive away and a short ferry ride. It's busy pretty much all year round for this reason, especially at weekends. However, it is a beautiful island (and a National Park, which you will have to pay 200 baht to enter on arrival).
The beaches are stunning and it has a very chilled out vibe during the day. Though there is always a party happening on the beach in the evening.
Accommodation ranges from 500 baht per night all the way up to the amazing Paradee Resort, which will set you back at least 13,000 baht a night!
I'd recommend arriving mid-week and just heading straight to Sai Kaew Beach. There are plenty of cheap accommodation options that accept walk-in only and won't take advance bookings. Try Silver Sands Resort (if you want to be right in the middle of the action at night), Jep's Bungalows (clean and cheap with a popular restaurant right on the beach), or Tub Tim (lovely place just round the headland on it's own little bay). All of the above cater for a backpacker budget.

So I've heard! I ended up going through Southern Thailand rather quickly due to my visa expiring sooner than I thought ... but I hope to get back there in a month or so and see more!! :-D over 10 years ago

I can recommend Tub Tim on Koh Samet. Stayed there last year in August. Different rooms available from super swish beach front, to smaller rooms, no AC or electricity at the back of the resort. Beach bar and restaurant were great fun and I liked sitting on the beach at night, looking round the rest of the bay and watching what was going on. Easy to walk to other parts of the island too. over 10 years ago

Koh Chang! It's a ferry ride from Trat. Stay in Lonely Beach. It's my favourite place in the world. So much fun and way less commercial than other islands. But if you want to dive definitely Koh Tao! over 10 years ago
