Traveling by train from Bangkok to chiang Mai. What should I know when buying a ticket? And any advice on dealing with the whole process?

Better to fly look at air asia/bangkok airways for cheap flight...just easier, safer and way faster...unless you have loads of luggage...i only paid $45 from bkk old airport to chiang mai!!! about 7 years ago
- Can you expand a bit on "safer"? Have there been safety issues on the train? Bill Brady about 7 years ago

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but our hostel owner in Bangkok suggested we bus this route because somewhere along the train route is under construction and you must get off and switch trains. No idea how much of a (non)hassle this is. We did an overnight bus two days ago and it was a relatively painless seven hours. If you decide to bus make sure you go to the Mo Chit terminal and buy a ticket there. Evidently much better than taking a tourist bus from central Bangkok. about 7 years ago
