Depends on your budget. Most popular islands are Phuket and Samui which are both right down the south a long way from Chiang Mai. Koh Tao has a very good reputation for diving and snorkelling and can be visited together with Phangan and Samui out of Chumphon on the East Coast. Samui has a party reputation with their full moon parties. Phuket on the west coast is a large island connected to the mainland by a bridge and has a very developed some would say over developed tourist infrastructure. and gets a lot of package tourists. Koh Phi Phi is nearby. Koh Lanta is less developed and more laid back. There are also islands closer to Bangkok like Koh Chang.
I would travel from Chiang Mai to Bangkok by plane or overnight train the go down the coast to Chumphon to ferry across to Kohs Tao, Phangan and Samui. That way you would see a range of islands. over 7 years ago

Please visit Phi Phi Islands in Phuket and stay in Holiday Inn . It's amazing
In Chiang Mai stay in Mae Rim and travel around. It's beautiful. In Mae Rim there is a vacation rental called Tiffin Talks. You can have a very economical stay with free breakfast, wifi and bicycle for rent. over 7 years ago
