I have never travelled on the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai but can tell you the distance by road is just over 900 kms, the train fare will probably be in the region of 600 Baht. There is an overnight train which takes about 10 hours. A friend of mine travelled this way just before Xmas 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. almost 8 years ago

Definitely take the overnight train and book 2nd sleeper! I cannot stress this point enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the train-ride but if I hadn't booked a sleeper it would have been a whole different story. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but I'm pretty stingy and I thought it was well worth it. There's also a party/restaurant carriage with funny lights and music if you want a break from the beautiful scenery :) over 7 years ago
