I have driven from Bangkok to Phuket dozens of times and it is a safe wonderful drive. GPS will certainly help but you don’t need it. The roads are well marked and in good condition all the way. There are two ways you can go and I suggest the Rangon way is less traffic and more beautiful. I have driven both ways many times and my preferred way is Bangkok to Prachuap Khir Khan which is a sleepy little fishing town past Hua Hin where we like to stay at a little Chinese Hotel on the water that is cheap and has lovely rooms and an excellent restaurant. From there as you head North just before Chumphon you take an exit at Wang Phai that cuts west to the Andaman and towards Ranong. Ranong to Phuket is an awesome drive about 4 hours. You will head through Khao Lak and Khao Sok National Park about an hour before Phuket if you take the Ranong way. Absolutely stunning and wonderful opportunity to see some of Thailand’s most pristine nature. about 7 years ago
