Looking to head to Thailand for 10 days at the end if the year. Ideas? Needs to have access to great food nearby (so not just resort food). Love to base ourselves somewhere in the south that avoids the usual resorts and the hordes of backpackers that have destroyed so much.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I really enjoyed Koh Lanta, off the coast Krabi. You can travel by boat via Phuket or Krabi. It is not yet touristy but does have the infrastructure to support tourists. There are certainly 5 star resorts but there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, including beach bungalows and jungle retreats.

I stayed in an amazing eco lodge called Baan Rao Bed and Breakfast (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Baan-Rao-Bed-and-Breakfast-Koh-Lanta). They are a gorgeous couple with 2 small children. You have full access to the house and amenities. It's a short walk to the beach but high on a small hill for the most gorgeous sunsets. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spacious.

You can snorkel, dive, drive, cycle, walk around the whole island. There is authentic Thai food by the locals as well as an authentic German bakery by the expats who fell in love with this small island with so much to offer.

The further you get away from the the pier the less busy and touristy it will be. I was there in peak season and it was not overcrowded with the rowdy and disrespectful backpackers that plague Phuket.

I hope you enjoy your holiday, wherever you choose to go! :) over 8 years ago
