Your top tips please

over 11 years ago about Zanzibar, Tanzania

Have you been? What did you like/not like? Any recommendations for places to eat that are not in 5* resorts? Much prefer the more local street places. Thanks :-)

Zanzibar was amazing. I travelled by boat from Dar es Salaam to the Zanzibar port. You have to make sure you have your passport on you as it get stamped going in and out of Zanzibar.

I stayed in a hostel which was nice and cheap. As it is mainly Muslim over there you have to cover up so no walking around in a bikini top.

I only stayed down south of the island for a few days then headed north which had the most amazing beaches i have ever seen, crystal clear waters.

There were great hotels to stay at and cheaper ones as well. I stayed in a hostel again and it was excellent. I spent most of the time either at the beach bar or lying on the sand and swimming. Up north of Zanzibar you can walk around in your swimmers.

Most of the places in Zanzibar are cheap but then you do get some that are well over priced. If you wanted to book in advance you can but other wise just wonder around while you are over there and you will find places to stay that are cheap. All hotels have the mosquito nets and a shower and toilet which is all you need really when you are in Zanzibar.

It is great to get lost in the tiny streets and shopping.

I had a excellent meal which i am sorry i cannot remember the name of the place but it did great western food.

I would go back to Zanzibar for sure. I did get in trouble by the police while over there because i was taking a photo of a sign but my camera looked like i was talking a photo of the police they wanted me to show them that i didn't take a photo of them so just be careful of that.

I would also suggest the night markets they are great. If you are going on your own tho i would not suggest going out at night time and only stick to places where you see westerners.

Oh i could keep talking about Zanzibar so if you have any questions just ask. over 11 years ago

Thanks Rachel99. I am comfortable in muslim countries as I currently live in one, so no string bikins for me. LOL.

Did you do any fishing or snorkelling? Was kit easily available or should I take my own? over 11 years ago

Fishing and Snorkelling is best on the top side of Zanzibar - i just wish i could remember what the name of the place was that i stayed at. Once you are there you can just book it in with the guys on the beach. Some of the people i was with went Diving as well. At night they can also take you on a Sunset Set Cruise - our guy never showed up so we just had a few drinks on the beach.

They have all the gear there for you for either snorkelling or diving.... I didn't do any snorkelling this time around but some of the people i was with said it was like something they had never seen! I am not to sure about fishing but i am sure if you ask they will find a way for you to do it as they all need the money over there.

There was this amazing over the water restaurant so we went for a walk along the beach to it. the guards let us on so we could check it out. There was so many tropical fish swimming around there. Worth having a look at. Be careful of jellyfish in Zanzibar tho - that is the only warning i have apart from that it is truly amazing. over 11 years ago
