If you are doing a trip to just Switzerland, I would recommend a travel card that will cover the train and buses. It is not a cheap country to travel in but definitely worth it. I agree hostels are the way to go and there are some great YHA hostels around. The train network in Switzerland is great and the trains are frequent and timely. We based ourselves in a town/city for a few days and did some day trips by train from the town. A couple of places not to miss - Geneva, Liechtenstein (you can get your passport stamped at the post office) on the train from Bern to Geneva, just before Lausanne you come out of a tunnel and have a fantastic view over Lake Geneva, Lucerne, and anywhere down south in the Alps is great. Have a great trip. almost 7 years ago
