What should be our safety concerns when travelling to Sri Lanka with our three year old next year in May?
We are planning to take in Galle and the surrounding area, not the North Eastern parts. Is there a better time to go between April and June?
Aysha, there's nothing to be overly concerned about. It's been pretty peaceful since 2009.
If you propose to visit the northern districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi,
Mullaittivu, Mannar and Vavuniya, you must obtain permission from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence beforehand. Do not attempt to travel without this permission.

I think it would be best to travel through a travel agent. A travel agent will take care of you though out your visit. You would also get a chauffeur guide to assist you while your are travelling. If you need any help feel free message me. I could introduce you to right people almost 8 years ago
After the civil war is end, Sri Lanka is very safe and most of travelers visit North and east ares.all areas are open for locals and tourist.no restrictions.

I just got back from Sri Lanka. We saw a lot of families with young children travelling there and enjoying themselves. The country was very safe. There is no need for a travel agent but if you wish to travel by car that would be easier than how we did it on the local buses and trains. We traveled in the off peak season so we just checked into hotels as we went without prior reservations. Enjoy your time there! The people are friendly, landscapes beautiful and the food is excellent. almost 8 years ago
We are here now with two kids aged 7 & 9. Certainly the civil war seems well behind them now and the people are wonderful. No particular hygiene problems like other nearby countries either.
However I would say be careful with Malaria (we took Malarone) as the Mosquitos are pretty bad.
And the driving here is also a risk. Not the worst I've ever experienced but pretty hairy at times. Just make sure you have thorough travel insurance, try to find good drivers and keep your fingers crossed!
Beautiful country though, highly recommended. over 7 years ago
