Driving down from Barcelona is going to be a bit messy... It would take you about 7 hours+road taxes... and it's just not point.

Best thing, take a speed train from Barcelona to Madrid. Railway company is RENFE and the train you have to take is called AVE and it just take around 2hours, from the centre of Barcelona to the centre of Madrid. I recomend you to buy the ticket in advance (at least 15 days before you take it) because you'll get special prices when buying online. This is the site http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html

Madrid is greaaaaaat! I hope you stay some nights! Now Gran Vía surrondings are very trendy. I recomend Calle Ballesta for good cocktails! Check http://www.agoda.com/ for hotels and Gran Vía/Callao/Huertas as areas to stay. over 8 years ago

This is my personal guide of Madrid for my friends (it's in Spanish... you can translate it in Google Translator if you don't speak Spanish! :) ) You'll find cool shops, areas for cocktail, museums... etc I hope you like it!
