Ok, pick pockets and theft is a real issue but it doesn't have to curtail your activities or hurt your travel experience. You DO however need to be informed and up to date about all the latest scams.Even the natives hold their backpacks in front of their chest in certain areas.

I carried a copy of my passport , one credit card and a little cash each day in my waist money belt. Any bag should be cross yr shoulder at ALL times with your hand visibly upon it. Beware of ANYONE who approaches and do not socialise with a smiling face. That's it.

Money belt and bag in front of you at all times. There are ATMs everywhere, so if you need more euros, just use an ATM, and never carry all of your money with you as you spend a day sightseeing. Pickpockets are professionals, and you will never know what hit you! over 6 years ago

I'm heading to Spain in January and plan on getting a ScotteVest for the trip. They're full of pockets, most of them inside. They're designed to be able to carry a lot and not look bulky.
Also, if you get stuck in a turnstile, don't hand your bag off to one person while another helps you out. I've heard that's a thing there. over 6 years ago
