My sister and I are travelling to Madrid for 3 days. I have been several times but my sister has never been, so what shouldn't I let her miss? e.g. Any stand-out art galleries?

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia! It is really close to Atocha Station.

It was my favourite... ;) about 11 years ago

Well today we saw the Biblioteca Nacional de España (www.bne.es) which had two exhibitions both were free which was cool. Only issue was that only one had any translations into anything other than spanish.

Apparently most musuems are free on Sundays so we intend to see Museo del Prado (www.museodelprado.es) and the Museo Nacional centro de Arte Reina Sofia then.

Retiro is also a great place to take a alfresco lunch if the weather is good. We are here in the autumn so all the leaves are orange and red. about 11 years ago

Well apparently every museum has different "free" periods.
Reina Sofia is free from 14:30 till 21:00 on Saturdays and 10:00 to closing on Sundays.

Prado is free from 5pm to 8pm on Sundays (great since I fly at 8pm...)

Thyssen cant tell if there are free periods about 11 years ago

I'm fairly certain there are no free times for Thyssen.

I would add the Palacio Real to your list of things to see (not necessarily inside, but definitely wandering around that area) about 11 years ago

I agree: Prado is a great must see!
And depending on the weather Retiro is gorgeous, take a boat on the lake. And for shopping: Xanadu!

And go make a Royal Palace tour!
