My husband and I did Spain by train. Barcelona - cordoba - Sevilla - Madrid . The trains are good but only between larger cities. Timely, comfortable and ok dining - nothing fancy. No good connections into Portugal though. Besides, Portugal is better done by bus especially if you are sticking to the algarve. about 9 years ago

San Sebastian - Madrid - Malaga by train, fine. Malaga to Seville by bus, great. Seville to Portugal by bus, great. All over southern Portugal by bus, no problems at all.
