What would the top countries be to explore in South America over 3 months? I've heard 3 months isn't enough, so will be open to extending that if our budgets allow....

Please include tips on how much time to spend in each country, and how much should we aim to budget per day – in AUD.

Our interests include hiking, exploring outdoors, culture, a bit of thrill. We're open to splurging on the big activities (Salt flats, Machu Picchu, Patagonia).

Also a few tips on getting around - is overland travel a good idea? Or should we stick to local busses? Have heard a lot of suggestions to skip international flights, as they are too pricey.

    Hi Milly,

Machu Picchu is definitely NOT overrated. If you have the time, I would do the trek there (I wish I did!). Peru is general is a fantastic destination for food, adventure, nature and charm. I especially loved Arequipa, Ollantaytambo and Cusco. I would plan to spend at least two weeks in Peru. As for buses, you get what you pay for. I would suggest you go for the higher end coaches, for comfort, safety and reliability.

One of the unexpected places we loved was Pucon in Chile. A nice little village and a trip to the natural hot springs at night wit a bottle of Gato Negro was great. If you leave the 'Gringo trail' try to have a reasonable level of Spanish. Remember half way through the day is siesta and sometimes not all services are available. Don't expect to eat at 7pm, rather 10pm. One More...Just out of Sarmiento in Argentina is a petrified forrest. The trees are not standing, rather laying on the ground but something you dont see every day.
