Am considering taking our vacation in South America this year but not sure where to go. This would be our first time in South America. We are not into white water rafting or any other energetic activities! We do however enjoy eating, drinking, sightseeing etc, and could be persuaded to do some more gentle activities such as horse-riding.
Argentina immediately comes to mind. Buenos Aires has many distractions for all ages, is sophisticated and safe for an 18- yr old to also venture out on her own. Lots of side trip options to Colonia del Sacramento in Colonia and the beaches of Punta Del Este, both in Uruguay. Of course, there also many places to enjoy an estancia and horse ride.
Another thought is Ecuador, but focusing on staying in places like Cuenca. I'd say Argentina has more going on with regard to your wanting to enjoy restaurants etc,
Not least is Peru. I loved Peru and think it a great destination for families with varied interests and ages. It's very easy to get around, GREAT food, and variety of art, culture, natural beauty and history spots between Lima, Cusco, Arequipa and the Amazon.
