I am visiting South Africa - flying on Cape Town - in October. Any tips to see? Is it better to hire a driver/guide or do it self-drive?

self-drive is easy. good deals under www.traveljigsaw.co.za for car rentals.
there's lots to see around cape town. get yourself a travel-guide-booklet and find out what is of your interest and then just do it on your own.
Cape Town City has a hop-on-hop-off bus which is great.

It is very easy to drive my son and I drove thru the coast which is wonderful a lot places to visit and see, hotels are easy to find, good places to eat.
For wine tasting in Cape Town is better to take a one day tour which it takes you to the best wineries and includes lunch. over 9 years agoAnswered by Mario Ramirez viaAsk a Nomad iPad app

You can absolutely drive it, but I'd still recommend a GPS. If you're a wine town, Franshoek is a great town with wineries all around. For the more adventurous, I'd drive down to Gansbaii area (about an hour or two southeast) to go cage diving with the great white sharks. I've done it twice and it's exhilarating.
Some other first time must-see's are the V&A waterfront, Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, and the penguins around that area. over 9 years agoAnswered by Andrew C viaAsk a Nomad iPad app

Robbin island is kind of a must do, but it's a lame tour. MUST go spend the time on table top mountain on a day it's not cloudy- it is cloudy a lot so pick a day to try and go early in case it gets pushed out. over 9 years ago

Try to get to the neighborhoods goods market, great fun, amazing vibe. It's every Saturday in Albert street at the Old Biscuit Mill in Soutriver. About 5km outside the CBD. Ask the locals for directions if you struggle to find it. over 9 years ago
