If you want to stop at Kruger, the best way is renting a car and selfdriving. The N4 is excellent and easy to drive, you should have no problem. It is not a cheap option though.

If you want to cut costs, maybe taking a bus to Nelspruit and renting a car for one or two days for the Kruger will be cheaper.

Be sure to stay overnight, the best time to drive around Kruger Park is early in the morning! over 6 years ago

One of the cheapest ways to travel is overland travel.

Check out the Johannesburg to Mozambique trip including Kruger National Park. The trip takes you back to Johannesburg. You can always just leave the trip one day early and end in Mozambique.

You could take a bus from Johannesburg to Whiteriver/Nelspruit - Whiteriver is an especially lovely town and is located only 20 minutes from Numbi gate in the Krugar Park. There are also plentiful amounts of travel agents there to help you formulate plans on how to best maximise your experience in Krugar. I'd check out the Lowveld Link bus or City Bug. Taking the bus (which isn't a long journey) to Whiteriver and breaking your journey there will save you the expense of renting a car all the way from Johannesburg. Instead, rent one from Whiteriver. Let me know if you want any further help, I grew up in that area :-) over 6 years ago

You can't use a hire car to cross border. All depends if you want a day trip I to MOZ? Or longer. If you head to Malelane (via your own hire car) and stay local, there are few guys that would take you in for the day, however, for a longer trip try booking greyhound bus.
