Returning from Kenya conference and safari; have 10 day layover in JNB--which does not seem particularly safe or attractive. Recommendations on how to use this time for older couple who have never seen Africa. Open to campervan, guesthouses, some low-cost tours maybe....like scenery, history, cultural and off-beat experiences.

    Oh! You lucky people.

Bushlore will hire you a 4WD with roof top tents, why not consider driving to Chobe (North of Botswana) and spend a few days there.

Alternatively, a drive to Durban, Port Elizabeth is not that far (but also not that nice).

Swaziland offers some great safari attractions.

Or, drive to Cape Town which is beautiful and spend some time relaxing on the beach away from lions. Just be careful of the baboons ;) over 7 years ago

You could always go to the Kruger National Park for animal viewing. Rent a normal car and stay in the accommodation in the park or in the surrounds (camping, self catering cottages, hotels, etc). over 7 years ago

Try the Kruger. Hire a car in Joburg, a 5 hour drive to stay in Giyani and see a real SA town ( Mopane Guest House very comfortable), buy some provisions, head to Kruger, take self catering place in the camps, drive south through the park, head back to Joburg. It's fab.. over 7 years ago

I think because you have had the safari experience in Kenya, I would find a cheap flight and head to Cape Town for the time you have........so much to do in Cape Town!!!! over 7 years ago
