It is possible, we looked into this route when researching for our own African road trip.

We rented a 4WD in J'burg from Bushlore, and it was so easy. Juts arrive, pick up the car, and go. It was packed with all equipment we needed for camping out, as well as two tents on the roof (there were four of us).

After much discussion, we didnt stay in South Africa, but I know you can do it. about 6 years ago

I've driven from CT to JHB numerous times. The roads are really decent, and loads of towns to stay at along route. almost 6 years ago

You have two options in terms of routes from Cape Town to JHB, there is the N1 this is an 1800km route not very scenic with some interesting towns however you have 20 days so I would rather recommend the N2 which is the Coastal route Very interesting but also 600km longer and you go Via Durban, plenty camp and caravan parks along both routes. almost 6 years ago
