The Orchird Street area is the main shopping area. Little India and China town are definitely worth visiting for the flavor and the food. You can spend a day at Sentosa Island. The zoo is very nice, but an hour or so train ride from the central distrist.
I've not used hostels there, but I found these two websites. They are set up like a travel agency and I'm sure they are making fair money off your booking, but still some decent prices. Not recommending, but you might look at them. There are many more if you Google "hostels Singapore".

Well, I stay at Feel At Home, Singapore. They are very good in their services, they are small but excellent. The staff is too good to assist you in anything, very friendly. 24 hours reception and the best part is that the MRT is just 300 meters away from their place which also comes/go directly to the airport. breakfast is very delicious as we have a chance to taste the Indian food every next day. Their website is www.feelathome.com.sg
and they are at BUGIS, which is the hub of 80% tourism on walking distance of 1-15 min only.

Depends on budget I suppose. If you are on a budget and/or are looking for the area with the most character; Little India is definitely the best area to stay in. The city is really easy to navigate, so even if you are interested in seeing/doing things that are not necessarily right there, it is really easy to get to wherever those things are. over 9 years ago

If you are visiting Singapore and looking for accommodation, do check out Five Stones Hostel! We are centrally located at Clarke Quay, where all the real action is. :) http://www.fivestoneshostel.com/ over 9 years ago

Basically if you are looking for budget accommodation in Singapore, there are 3 areas you can look at.
1) Chinatown - although it's called Chinatown, you do find a good mix of races and nationalities here. There are many hostels and budget hotels in this area that can cater to budget travelers. Also, the food options here are fantastic!
The older shopping centers like People's Park Complex and People's Park Centers offer cheap foot massages for like less than US$20 a session!
2) Bugis - a vibrant area very popular with younger generation. Many shopping options like street bazaar and glitzy shopping malls ( Bugis Junction and Iluma) can be found here. The main attraction here is the Arab Quarters (Kampong Glam) which is a quaint area dominated with rows of pre-war shop houses.
These shop houses contain a mishmash of retail and F&B establishments hawking wares like indie t-shirts, old vinyl records, textiles, Persian carpets, fishing tackles, arts, Arabian perfumes, Turkish cafes, Yemeni restaurants, Shisha, etc.
Also the famous Sim Lim Square which is like the mecca for all things electronics is also located in the same precinct.
3) Little India - This is definitely the area which stands out ethnically. You will see a lot of Indian curry restaurants, jewelry shops, flower garland stalls and a lot of captivating Indian temples here. Also a popular backpackers area as it offer cheap food and drinks.
One must visit place in Little India is the 24-hour Mustafa Shopping Center on Syed Alwi Road. This place never sleeps and it sells almost anything..seriously..almost anything.. from health supplements to perfumes to eletronics to gold jewelery and even Swiss branded watches like Tag Heuer! Good for those who are suffering from jetlags and when whole of Singapore is closed for the day. :)
These budget accommodation can all be found at this site which specialize in budget hotels in Singapore.
