Using my son's German registered car. We would like to do a road trip over a month or so in the Balkans, including Kosovo and BiH. Any bad news? Thanks.
I went by motorbike from Croatia over to Bosnia and down to Montenegro before heading back into Dubrovnik in 2009. While not the same routing at all, I can say that road travel was very safe and we had no issues at all going through remote roads, areas, or towns. We had a kawasaki (in case that matters), and we stayed off the roads at night.

there are some less-than-ideal roads in the Balkans, but if you exercise care there's nothing to stop you. The driving standards are pretty so-so too, as evidenced by the higher than the European average road death stats. Expect the unexpected.
In Kosovo, take extreme care in the north, close to the Serbian border. political tension there often flares and border crossings on the main motorways are often the target.
