I know russia and Ukraine but are there any places where I shouldn't use russian? What countries could I anticipate that they speak russian

    You can use Russian in any country of the former Soviet Union. Even in countries like Georgia, that was in an armed conflict with Russia not long ago, people are willing to speak Russian with turists.
    Besides these, to my knowledge, Russian is commonly spoken or at least understood also in Bulgaria. over 7 years ago

    Russian language is surprisingly international, given both the historical tie to the Soviet Union as well as the Russian diaspora. Other than most former Soviet republics, places like Mongolia, Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Israel has large number of Russian speakers. about 7 years ago

    Former Soviet Union - Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Moldova.

    Some people, espessialy the older generation in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Republics of former Yugoslavia. However, they don't like to speak Russian, because of their history and relationship with USSR. In some of these countries they used to study Russian at school.

    Bulgarian and Czheh languages are very close to Russian and they can understand it.

    Correction to one of the posts: in the republics of the former Yugoslavia not many people speak Russian, even the older generation not. But most will be happy to try to understand it, if you are a visitor. about 7 years ago
