How can a backpacker get from northeast borneo to palawan philippines? I would prefer not to fly, say, back west then to manila then to puerto princesa. Is there a boat that goes across? Is it safe and practical? How long does it take, how much does it cost? Or are there direct flights?

Highly doubt if you can find a ferry that goes between Indonesia/Brunei into Palawan. You could try to find one to the city of Zamboanga and then try your luck to find a ferry to Puerto Princesa on Palawan, but they wouldnt be scheduled and it would be hit or miss. Not to mention the rather undependable state of maritime travel in these areas PLUS the monsoon typhoons and swells make for rather UNSAFE conditions. I suggest you fly from Kota Kinabalu via CebuPacific and then onward to Palawan. Safer, more practical in the long run. almost 7 years ago

There are some really good deals with Cebu Pacific from Puerto Princessa,Palawan to Manila then on to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo. If you can be bothered Air Asia fly from Clarke airport. Its a couple of hours bus ride from the international airport but they do have some good Promo's almost 7 years ago

There are boats that travel from Kudat of Borneo to Palawan Island. You can't find any information on the internet because well, sometimes its better that way :) about 2 years ago
