Is it safe as an American citizen, to go to Siargao, and is there a big risk of disease in that area?
I was planning on traveling there in mid April this year.
There are travel safety warnings for eastern Mindanao including the province of Surigao del Norte, but it's generally considered that the island is well away from the trouble spots.
Surigao is a particularly laid back experience, with violent crime non-existent and petty crime pretty low. Exercise the usual caution with belongings.
Throughout the Philippines, the tourist resort areas are generally much safer than other regions.

Expect an influx of tourist during the month of April and May. No worries, I can 100% give you an assurance that its a peaceful place. Disease? Havent heard of that when i was there, i came home from Siargao safe, healthy and sound. about 4 years ago
It's pretty safe in Siargao, It's a chill island with very warm and helpful locals. There could be lots of tourists, too, depending on the season of your visit. I wouldn't be worried about dangerous diseases, but do bring a mosquito repellant. Other than that, it's safe and I'm quite sure you'll have tons of fun. about 4 years ago
