as everywhere, tourists are targets because , relatively speaking, they are wealthy. The camera or cell phone you carry without a thought is actually worth a week's or a month's salary to anyone tempted into theft. I'm sure the volunter organisation you'll be joining has some good information on the good and bad parts of town. but think about your home town and the places where it's unsafe.... ame rules will apply in Cusco. Alleys, dark streets, near bars and nightclubs and in remote or isolated spots.
best course of action is to put the camera away, don't wer any flashy jewellery and try to blend in as a local. over 6 years ago

I have been to Cusco many times - maybe 7. I haven't had any problems. You definitely need to keep an eye on your things. I think getting pick pocketed is your greatest risk. I only take what I need with me. And, I keep money in various pockets. That said...I have used my iphone openly on the street and my laptop in cafes.

The one thing that makes me uncomfortable are the taxis. I would recommend taking only authorized taxis. They have the signs on top. Anywhere in Cusco should cost 3 soles.

Cusco is perhaps my favorite place in all of Peru. I am sure you will enjoy it! over 6 years ago

I went to Cusco as a young woman to do volunteer work, found it very safe and tourist-friendly as long as you use nromal street smarts, eg. keep an eye on your bag, especially at festivals, markets or other busy places, use registered taxis at night, keep with a group at night, watch your drinks, etc. about 6 years ago
