No trains in South America unfortunately. Flying is the simplest and less time consuming option, but buses are by far the cheapest method and are generally quite reliable and frequent. They can take some time though.
Alternatively if you visit a city in north east Peru called Iquitos, which is the largest city in the world unreachable by land, (you can get there by boat or plane only) then you can take a river cruise on a cargo ship, over the border and into brazil and Columbia from there. Don't think they go to North Peru tho.
