I went to Peru right after I turned 21 but I was with my boyfriend. We did the salkantay trek to Machu pichu and met three different woman who were independent travelers. One was from Italy, another from England and the third from Spain. When I asked them if they ever felt unsafe, they said no as long as you make friends quickly and travel in groups. A lot of hostels can network you with other travels so, even if you arrive by yourself, you can travel with other people. Traveling alone is always a bit risky and certain safety precautions should always be followed! over 5 years ago
