I was told that I can bring my own cellphone with me and simply purchase a new SIM card for use in Peru, but I have also read that many North American cellphones do not work on the same frequency/network as those in South America. Any suggestions?

When I went, we just rented one at the airport and it was only 30 usd (I was there in 2010). We traveled extensively through the southern portion of the country and did not get consistent service even with their providers. Depending on where you are traveling and how reliable service you need, I would contact hostels/hotels in the region and ask about the type of cell coverage they get locally. over 5 years ago
