My only advice about your trip would be to get some planning and booking done first. PNG is not really the place to turn up and hope for the best. I assume you'll be flying into POM first and then a flight to Vanimo? Rather than wander the streets finding an agent, do an internet search before you leave and make contact. Maybe even ask them to collect you from the airport and drive to the agency in town so you can sign your paperwork.
I really love PNG, despite a horrific experience there in 2010. The people of PNG are genuinely beautiful caring and very sincere people. In saying this, I also felt a little scared there, I have a wealth of travel under my belt and PNG was probably the scariest, most tense place I have ever been to.
Be cautious while you're there - don't drop your guard just because you're on holidays. I just can't stress this enough in PNG. If your country has the service, register with the consulate as well to let them know you're there. (Australia service is through DFAT and Smarttraveller) and also make sure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
Enjoy your trip!

Jacques, PNG is a high-crime and often dangerous place at the best of times.... sadly this is not the best of times. An election is underway and there's a great deal of unrest.
Stay away from protests, polling stations and government buildings for the time being.
Here are some safety tips for PNG.
