Have there been any safety issues on the road going from the US border to Rocky Point?
Jan, back in May 2010 the US government issued a warning about the road from Arizona to Rocky Point. A couple of weeks later they admitted they had no evidence to back up the claims, and blamed an over-reacting civilian in the office.
Northern Mexico and the border areas can be dangerous, and sadly the involvement of innocent (non-drug industry) people is rising - but it is still a very small number. I have a piece on the worldnomads safety page about Mexico, where I discuss the problem in more detail.
Your government recommends against travelling Mexico's roads at night, and that's mostly because of wandering livestock rather than bandits.
Mexico's problems are on the increase, so is the place STILL safe.... about as safe as it ever was, and that means taking sensible precautions and being aware of your surroundings. Try to remember you are in a foreign country and this is not just a beach outside Pheonix or Tucson, the rules are a bit different. over 9 years ago
It is sad about the misinformation that goes out about Mexico. Our own government can't get the right information out. I travel to Puerto Penasco frequently and I feel safer traveling there than I do traveling in South Phoenix.Like everyone says, you just need to aware of what you are doing and you will have a wonderful time. over 9 years ago
