I'm looking for events that locals go to as well, like live music gigs or things outdoors over summer.

The truth is that there isn't usually too much on, and many events that are put together tend to be very small and out of proportion to the advertising that goes in to them. But if you're still curious have a look at eventfinda.co.nz. The local council websites often post events as well. about 3 years ago

I am sorry but I disagree with the first answer from Nathan. I live in New Zealand and there are heaps of events going on throughout the year and some of them are 2-3 day events. It depends when you are visiting in NZ. The best times to visit is spring and summer as events are numerous. It also depends where you are visiting in NZ - here is a website that is for backpackers that has good detail on events in NZ https://www.backpackerguide.nz/top-new-zealand-events-in-2017/
Also, go to the local information centre in most towns in NZ to get to know whats on in that particular town.
And as Nathan mentioned https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/whatson/events/new-zealand about 3 years ago

No better website than Town Square https://www.townsquare.co/ to discover what's on in New Zealand. There's heaps of cool events to go to, especially right now during the summers. Their app is a must-have on your phone if you're in New Zealand. almost 3 years ago
