What are the buses and public transport like in Auckand?
What options are there to get around?
Is the system reliable?

Rob,
Like most cities they tend to have their good and bad days. I was there a couple of years ago and had a pretty easy experience getting around on buses. The train network is not as large as other major cities in the world, so worth checking out their public transport site - http://www.maxx.co.nz/ - if you're looking for longer trips.

I would say non existent. Was in Auckland last year and just walked the Coast to Coast Walk and around Mt Eden, as well as CBD. Had a good time, but if I had to stay there for a longer time I would definitely organize a car... about 10 years ago

As someone who came from a country where nearly every city had efficient public transport, Auckland I can definitely say it is a car city, not a public transport city. It is very difficult to get around without a car and the buses and trains are not punctual or efficient. Generally it is a lot quicker to drive than to take public transport which is a shame. almost 10 years ago
