We are travelling to NZ for 3 weeks in June. Has anyone worked out if its cheaper to hire a camper van or hire a car and hostel while out there.

Tks

Camper van. But a van, not like a camper if that makes sense? Definitely the way to go. almost 7 years ago

Tks Libby. Not sure what you mean. Are you saying hire a van that has abed in it rather than a camper van. My concern is that we visiting both islands in June and July, so it might be a bit cold.

Vince, I went to North Island for a week in a campervan last July. Yes cold. But beautiful. I asked about tips for hiring a camper at the time - here's the response. Good tips. http://answers.worldnomads.com/questions/new-zealand/13415/renting-a-campervan-in-nz-in-july-is-this-mad almost 7 years ago

Christy, Tks really useful. Do you happen to remember which company you used?

Hi Vince, we booked a "4 berth GEM" through Pacific Horizon (http://www.pacifichorizon.co.nz/). We chose them because they were one of the few companies with a depot in Wellington. They're also mid-size and friendly staff. If you start in Auckland, Christchurch etc, there are loads of other options.
(Check out this site for a big list and reviews: http://www.rankers.co.nz/)

One note on this specific Van - with our two young kids, we thought it would be a good idea if their bed wasn't up high and the GEM's second bed is on ground level - It's actually the two front seats converted. However, the setup of this bed every night and take-down every morning was a massive pain. We're good campers and not adverse to a little bit of construction, but there were something like 20 separate steps to assemble the thing.

If there's just two of you, go for a van size like a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit or similar. Enough space, but still easy to manoeuvre on NZ's mountain roads. And in July, get something with a gas/diesel heater! (One that you can use without being plugged into a Van park!). Being winter, you can also get some great deals. I think ours was 40% off regular rates. almost 7 years ago

I would actually go for a car - the backpackers are a lot of fun in new zealand (use the BBH to choose the best ones), and also simply camping (to keep the budget) is a great option. The backpackers are great places to meet other travelers and hear about new things to do plus they usually have great kitchens. Not to mention that in the smaller ones you can get local tips from the owners that you would otherwise never hear of almost 6 years ago

I would rent a car. Hotels and motels are not expensive. almost 6 years ago
