NZ HOLIDAY. Planned routes.

almost 6 years ago about New Zealand

Below is the holiday I have planned for January for 2 adults and a 9 year old child. Since I have never been to New Zealand I'd like advice on whether this holiday makes sense in the order, how long we are at each location and whether I am missing anything vital. Any advice for family accommodation would also be appreciated. One thing I think I'm missing is Nelson but I've been trying to limit the hours spent driving.

Day 1
Fly to Christchurch

Day 2
Stay in Chirstchurch
Explore Christchurch and Akaroa

Day 3
Drive to Franz Joseph

Day 4
Fox Glacier

Day 5
Drive to Queenstown

Day 6
Explore Queenstown

Day 7
Drive to Te Anau
Explore Te Anau area

Day 8
Milford Sound

Day 9
Glow worm caves

Day 10
Drive to Oamaru

Day 11
Drive to Kaikoura

Day 12
Whales and dolphins

Day 13
Drive to Wellington

Day 14
Te Papa museum

Day 15
Drive to Rotarua

Day 16
Hot Stuff/ Haka

Day 17
Drive to Bay of Plenty
Rest and relax

Day 18
Rest and relax

Day 19
Rest and relax

Day 20
Drive to Aukland

Day 21

Wave bye bye

I'd highly recommend catching the train from Christchurch to Greymouth, then rent your car from there and continue on to franz josef. Beautiful scenery! almost 6 years ago

A few years ago, I spent 2 weeks on the South Island with our 18 mth old in tow - didn't want to spend all day in the campervan driving either! For that part of your trip, I think you've got enough time, although consider NOT driving to Te Anua/Milford Sound and taking a day trip scenic flight. It's a really long way to drive! Flights aren't cheap, but it's an amazing experience and easy to book from the tiny Queenstown airfield. Definitely a highlight of our travels.

Next week, I'm driving Wellington to Auckland (now with 2 kids in tow!) and think a week is fine although we have no detailed plans to be anywhere at any specific time. A lot will depend on the weather as it's mid-winter at the moment. almost 6 years ago
