I am planning to travel to NZ in 2 weeks time with my fiancée. We will use Queenstown as our base. What would be the best way to go to Milford Sound from there? Would it be better to take packages or backpack?

Best way to travel is by wheels. Lovely drive all the way and good scenery almost 9 years ago

The answer to this depends entirely on how much time you have available. It's a LONG trip by car/bus and Milford Sound isn't really on a route to anywhere else. I splurged on a scenic flight/helicopter trip to Milford Sound and thought it was totally amazing - something I'll never forget. We took a tiny aircraft from Queenstown airport over the mountains to Milford Sound, then a boat trip for a few hours and returned via helicopter which stopped on top of a glacier and we got out to explore and take photos for about 1/2 an hour. This way I got to tick off two of my must-do's - helicopter and glacier - all in one day. It also meant I had more time on my two-week trip to visit more of the northern end of the South Island which was also really beautiful. almost 9 years ago

This was four years ago and this info is probably to late for Keith Chan but it might help others.

We used http://www.tracknet.net/ shuttles for hiking the Milford track. They picked us up right in the middle of queenstown and dropped us off in Te anau and picking us up in Milford Sound and returning to queenstown. The driver was nice and it was great to let someone else do the long drive back. The drive was ridiculously beautiful in places though, it would have been nice to be able to stop and take photos

We stayed at "alabasters" In queenstown, it was very comfortable and the owner let us keep some of our luggage we didn't want to hike with on the track. over 8 years ago

My ex and I took the bus tour/boat tour package with Mitre Peak back in 2010 and it was quite pleasant. over 8 years ago

Thanks for all your answers. They have been extremely helpful.
In the end we took the package with Real Journeys. On a hindsight, Southern Discoveries would be a better choice as they offer a visit to the underwater observatory with almost the same price. Self drive would have been enjoyable but I find that it'll be too stressful. The road can be difficult to negotiate in certain stretch. over 8 years ago

Go by tour bus! There's lots of tours offered (check with the Queenstown tourism office) that will drive you there in a large, air conditioned coach bus (with pit stops along the way) and set up a cruise and lunch for you. It's nice to go with a group of new people you can get to know, and it's a lot less work than figuring out all of the logistics yourself! over 8 years ago
