Hi. I'm being considered for a fantastic job in the Hague, but I worry about leaving the lush fields and warm company of Ireland for the more clique-ish culture that I've heard about in Den Haag.

Is it possible for an Irish traveller to find friends, music and company in this oh-so-Continental city? In what neighbourhood should I hope to live?

Yes, The Hague is one of the best cities in The Netherlands. It is not Amsterdam, which is very dirty and a magnet for some of the trashiest tourists you will ever find. The Hague has a great atmosphere and is very fun. Some of the better neighborhoods a the Statenkwartier and Loosduinen. And if you really want to be at the shore, then try Scheveningen.

The people in the city are much more approachable and a better class than those in Amsterdam. It is very hip and has that great mix of cultures, with lots of festivals and celebrations.

Wassenaar is a great community for expatriates. It has bus access to good schools and the people are friendly, international, and generally interesting. The bicycle paths are excellent for letting children transport themselves to friend's homes. about 7 years ago
