Floyd, it's hard to go wrong in Amsterdam, there's just about anything you want. I love the place for it's great restaurants and hole-in-the-wall jazz bars. Sitting outdoors at a bar and watching life go by on a canal is hard to beat especially when it stays light until well into the evening.
There are more hard core things to do (obviously, it's famous for it) but if you do venture into the red light district there are a few do's and don'ts:

when it comes to nightlife there are 3 main spots to check out

Leidseplein for restaurants, bars dace bars and clubs

Rembrandt: for cafes, dance bars and clubs and some restaurants (not as varied as leidseplein)

Red light District: for bars, pubs and female company (not recommended for clubbing) there is only one club in the area (that i know of) almost 7 years ago
