I'm planning a trip to Kathmandu for 4 days with 3 other friends. Could you guys give us recommendations for things to do while we're there? We'd like to go trekking but may not have enough time - is that correct? We'd like to experience the culture and see a few key historical sites, maybe even try some adventure sports. I'd also like to know where to go to get a good view of the mountains.

Correct, you aren't going to be able to do too much: you could go trekking, on one of the treks closer to kathmandu but your time can probably be better spent.

A good day trip from Kathmandu is the town of Bhaktapur: some photos here http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=bhaktapur about 7 years ago

Hi Simon, thanks for that. I think we may postpone our trip coz the more I read about Nepal I realise I'd love to spend more time there and be able to go trekking and see the historial sites.

Other than Kathmandum and Bhaktapur, I'd like to visit Pokhara too - so definitely no point in going there for a short trip. about 7 years ago

Tough call: I hate postponing trip! But I've only had a month in Nepal and it wasn't nearly enough! WN now helps fund teacher training in Nepal via the Australian Himalayan Foundation and they sometimes organize very spacial trips. And if you are REALLY keen, World Expeditions are currently doing a Trans-Himalayan trek from one side to the other: only thing is - it takes 6 months! Go. Enjoy. I was in Katmandu 1 year ago and was repeatedly stopped by communist youth gangs who collected small fees from both myself and my guide when trekking thru small villages around Kat. Unless you are a Buddist Monk or love seeing people suffer in unbelievable poverty I would avoid Kat altogether. John over 6 years ago
