Most tours of Morocco depart from Casablanca, Tangier or Marrakech, but there are some companies who do tours directly out of Merzouga (which is one of the closer towns to the Sahara) including overnight stays at desert campsites. almost 9 years ago

You can depart to the Sahara desert from anywhere in Morocco. Only please allow yourself to have enough dates. Note that Morocco is a large country and the driving distances are quite large. If you have 3 days then Marrakech or Fes are probably the best base cities. If you have some more days, then you can leave from Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat anywhere in Morocco. If you are planning to travel on your own then you should make your way to either Merzouga and start camel trek from there to Erg Chebbi sand dunes or to M'hamid or Foum Zquid for your adventure to Erg Chigaga. To visit these sand dunes however, you need to book a desert trip with tour operator or hire a guide with 4x4 WD
