My friend and I are arriving in Mexico City on the 6th October and flying out of Mexico City on 16th October 2009. We are interested in travelling to the pyramids of Teotihuacan, Chichen Itza, Cancun, potentially VeraCruz and Catemaco. We are unsure whether to book a tour or try and coordinate things ourselves. Any advice about good budget tours or cheap do it yourself travel (including getting to and from different destinations) would be appreciated!

You will get varying advice on this but as a long time traveler and now resident of Mexico, I would advise you to wait to book until you arrive. Prices in Mexico are always negotiable and you can always price shop once you arrive. It appears you are interested in culture and Cancun has little to offer, other than beaches, and many of these are now in bad condition due to erosion. A good base for exploring Chichen Itza and other sites in the Yucatan, is the Yucatans largest city Merida. The city itself is worth several days.
As far as travel within Mexico, ADO buses offer excellent services and would be good from Mexico City to Veracruz , for example. www.ticketbus.com.mx for prices and schedules. For long distances such as Mexico City to Cancun or Merida, you might want to take a look at websites for two excellent budget airlines, Volaris and Interjet. over 11 years ago

I still advise against booking anything until you arrive. You will do much better once there. Discount vouchers mean little since they are widely distributed to the public. over 11 years ago
