If you want to explore México just take universal precautions, dont do things you wouldnt do in dangerous cities such as la or ny. These days theres a drug war in México because recent studies state that the mexican government is supporting one cartel. So go wherever tourists would go, there is safe. Dont take the risk to explore the country, there are many things to discover, just that now its not he right time.

Lama, There is indeed a drug war going on in Mexico. The violence is restricted to about 80 of the 2500 municipalities in Mexico, so it's not everywhere. But it would be pretty easy to stumble into the wrong place ant the wrong time if you were not an experienced Mexico traveller.
However, the good news, there's no evidence the drug gangs are targeting tourists, and the violence is not occurring (generally) in the tourist spots. The resort area of Cancun is free of drug violence, but the nearby town of Cancun is not somewhere you want to go "exploring".
If you do decide to take a road trip, plan your next move and get advice from locals about where's safe and where you should avoid. In general, avoid driving on Mexican highways (especially rural ones) at night. There's wandering livestock for a start, and on some of them you might encounter roadblocks manned by local gangs who'll demand some form of payment, or rob you, or maybe worse.
On the upside, I read a report last week that said Mexico City has done what New York did a few years back and really cleaned up its crime problem, there are many places now where you go exploring on foot and enjoying the local cafes and culture.
Mexico has a lot to offer, but do your research about the places you want to go to.
